It's been a few months since I've posted mainly because I've been busy with law school (especially with midterms coming up). So instead of writing an entire post I thought I would just throw out a topic for some discussion.
Recently Miss Nebraska (Teresa Scanlan) was crowned the 2011 Miss America. She is the first Miss Nebraska to be crowned as Miss America and the youngest Miss America (age 17) in the past twenty some years. Now usually I would not give this a second thought. However I recently heard that she plans to attend Patrick Henry College. So I decided to do a little more research into her background. I discovered that she was home schooled through the tenth grade, is one of seven children, and very outspoken about her Christian faith.
One article I read had a quote from her in which she said that she felt the pageant was were God wanted her and said that she would always pray while getting ready for pageants.
She plans to attend PHC and then go on to pursue a degree in law.
So what do you all think? She is quite obviously seeking to glorify God in this "field" that she is in. So do you all think this is a field Christians should be involed in? What are you thoughts?

Wow...that is so hard to determine. I would never say that she wasn't in God's will because it's not my position to say "Well, there is no way God has called you to this." God is the ultimate judge. I don't think that someone strutting across the stage in an immodest swim suit is glorifying God because God calls women to be modest, discreet, sober, etc. I think that is drawing attention to the outward appearance. No one looking at that will think "Wow, I want to know God...can't you just see God in her? I mean, look at those legs!" So...all in all I don't know. Do I believe she loves God? Yes. I have no reason not to believe it if she says that and there's no way I could ever determine whether or not she is a Christian. Only God can determine that. However, she could love God but still have a lot to learn. I have loved God for a long time and my lifestyle and goals have changed dramatically over the years thanks to God's grace. But just because I wasn't in the right doesn't mean God wasn't still working on my heart, growing me, teaching me, etc. Maybe somewhere down the road she will be convicted and promote modesty and thanks to her previous Miss USA winnings people will be willing to listen. Interesting post and very thought-provoking.
ReplyDeleteI found this young lady very amazing. She is homeschooled, a Christian, going to PHC and majoring in political science....every one of those things something I have done and plan on doing/hope to do.
ReplyDeleteI read some about her interview. She loves God with all of her heart. Look at those pictures posted. I saw the video. AS SOON as she was announced she pointed towards heaven as to signify that God received the glory. For several minutes she kept raising her hands. These people that see this young lady are not going to be astounded that she just walked across stage in an immodest swim suit. But they will be amazed at her giving glory to God. Remember 'Do Hard Things' by Alex and Brett Harris? Not every 17 year old girl wins 'Miss America' and gives the glory to God. What a testimony!
I'm not saying "Christian girls go out and try to win pageants and become Miss America!" It's a hard way to go. But don't rail on this young lady. God wants us to bloom where we are planted. I was planted on a farm. She was planted in pageants.

Hmmm...thought provoking. I don't think it's a great testimony that she did the whole swimsuit thing, BUT it's great that she won, showing that homeschooled Christian kids can be cool.
ReplyDeleteInteresting thoughts everyone. Just keep in mind that we are not judging her or her beliefs. Also remember that standards of modesty are different for different Christians. Merely because our standards are more strict than hers does not mean that we are more mature spiritually. If that was the case then the Amish must be more mature spiritually than your regular conservative Christian. Just something to keep in mind.
